Sometimes you just wanna...

So now we know why Matty Jarvis has been dropped. His end product isn't enough. I think that is absolutely ridicolous. This means he should drop Michael Kightly, who is yet to put in a decent cross! Dave Edwards (who I think has had a terrific season so far), Greg Halford, are also not great crossers of the ball, and Jarvis brings more to our game than them two. Speed. He is fouled countless times, one freekick leading to the goal against Wigan I believe..
Against Stoke I don't think he will pick Jarvis, or against Arsenal and Chelsea. But after that, we have Bolton and Brum at home, two games he has to play in for me. At home we need to attack them with both wingers, Aston Villa do it with Milner and Young so why not? It has payed off for them so far.

Got a different opinion to me? Or agree and want to let it out? Comment.

  1. Quite agree. That sitter that Vokes missed against Hull...who crossed it in? Doyle's last minute chance at Goodison...who supplied the pass? Maybe Matty needs to master the long throw...

  2. I think Matty is unlucky to find himself sitting on the sidelines but that said, his end-product hasn't been good enough. Far too many times he skins his full-back but then sends in a cross that doesn't make it passed the near post.

However, I recognise the threat he gives us and agree that he should play against the lower placed sides at home.

But for me, he hasn't got the same quality that Kightly brings to the table. OK, Kites isn't as good at beating his full-back but he opens defences up with passes, movement and moments of real skill. Look at the penalty against Villa as a prime example. One clever turn, bang, penalty and we're back in the game.

I like the idea of being solid across the midfield and leaving to the likes of Kites, SEB and Doyle to win us the game.

But definitely would like to see Matty back in the starting XI soon.

  3. A midfield of Jarvis, Kightly, Castillo and Henry is pretty good. Solid in the centre holding for the wingers to attack, but then I'd be feeling sorry for Dave Edwards.

  4. I think for the most part that's true (your comment Louie) - but if MK and MJ are just a touch off, you're leaving the two in the centre with a hell of a lot to do (whereas Edwards as another winger seems to offer some more all round phyisicality) and lacking the guile of Milijas to unlock defences. Mick's got some tough decisions at 4-4-2, but we seem to play better with that than at 4-5-1.

  5. And I suppose that is the crucial truth. You would've thought Kightly and Jarvis would be perfect for the 4-5-1 system with their work rate and directness but we do seem to play better with 4-4-2

  6. Interesting discussion. Although I am a big Matt Jarvis fan, I think by playing 'narrower' these last few games has enabled us to close down midfield and stop teams 'playing'. For the rest of the season its important to have a big squad and different attacking scenarios available so maybe Mick is still looking at various options. I think Matt will still be in Mick's plans, even if its only on the bench for a few weeks, as he can be a very useful asset if we need to go all out attack to salvage a point for example, but I dont think he will play this risky strategy over the next two games. More like damage limitation, soak up the pressure and counter attack. However, I do think Matt will have a part to play in certain games over the course of the season.
    Kind Regards, Paul.

  7. Thank you Paul. I am a big fan of Jarvis too, but I do think we have to adopt different tactics over the next two games. Maybe if we are leading with not long left (unlikely I know) but his pace could cause problems with counter attacks
