Back in the day...

My age (fourteen, nearly fifteen), is probably the age when you have a childhood hero.

The best I've seen ever at Wolves
Of course, mine would be one of the Wolves players today as I never experienced GOD playing for Wolves, or when Robbie Keane was playing upfront with him. Going further back you have the Doog, Johnny Richards and Peter Knowles. If you are really ancient, you watched Swinbourne, Wright and Broadbent.

For me and many Wolves fans my age it would be Superman himself, Kevin Doyle. He sets a perfect example to kids and other players. He has no agent, he makes his own decisions. I'm sure an agent would have told him to sign for Sunderland or Villa, the other clubs rumoured to have been interested in him last summer. On the pitch, he is a complete forward. He wins it in the air, despite generally being smaller than those marking him, he holds it up and chooses the right pass. Not to mention his tireless running and annoying defenders. And when he gets the chance, he usually scores. Nine goals may not seem like many, but he has scored more than a quarter of our goals this season.

He is rightly being linked with the likes of Arsenal and Juventus, because he is good enough for a side like them. He wouldn't look out of place in any top four side. He's better than Eduardo at Arsenal. They are the same age, and Doyle is scoring goals in a lower team and in much better form.

Whatever player we sign, it wouldn't top keeping Doyle in the summer.

Who were your favourite players growing up?

  1. Knowlesey, such a shame about him. Brings me back this does to when we had a decent side. Doyle is good, but has a lot to do to be anywhere near Bully, Knowles or The King.

  2. Hmmm, I'd say Mike Bailey. Really under rated, but always liked him. Great skipper.

    Nice write up

I'm eighteen, has to be Joleon. He was simply amazing for us, getting us up and when he came back from that dreadful injury. I often wonder how that season would have been if we had had Murray, Joleon and Ndah.

  5. Hmmm, I wonder.

No question, the man Louie called GOD.

Bully was simply amazing for a long long time. And he still is working for Wolves and often talks in the press. Hope he's right, and we keep Doyler.

  7. Franky Munro! What a class act. Midfielder turned centre half who could really play. That was when I was a boy but The Hoff is right. Anyone who saw the hardest working and most reliable centre forward in the history of football knowes what a proper hero looks like. Great article bloggerwolf

  9. When I was 7 in 1988 my step dad took me to see Bully play. That was it for me. Andy Mutch supporting Bull, Robbie Dennison on the wing, David Kelly was another favourite a little later. Thems were the days. Brilliant blog, thanks.

  10. So many to choose from...
Bully, Peter Knowles, Mike Bailey, Billy Wright, Ron Flowers, John Richards, Derek Dougan, Kevin Wagstaff, Mark Kendall, John De Wolf, Keith Curle, Steve Kindon, Stephen Froggatt, Paul Ince, Frank Munro....I could go on and on.
Doyle is a very decent player and I hope next season we see a few more goals from him.

  11. Kenny Hibbitt. A true legend. I remember one season he scored 4 on the opening day! A loyal servant you don't see the like of these days

  12. I saw King John in Beatties one christmas eve, got him to write a yuletide greeting and sign it, photocopied it and added it to all my cards that year. Now there is someone for Doyle to emulate. 27 league goals in the top flight!
