Interview with a Sunderland fan

With the final game of the season coming up I was fortunate enough to find Lee Wilkins, a Sunderland fan, to talk about his and our team.

How would you describe Sunderland’s season?
This year, Sunderland actually have a net spend of around £10-15 million; so considering we finished 15th and 16th in the past 2 seasons and are on course for a 11th/12th placed finish then I have to say it's been a good season. The derbies have been a huge miss however but with them back up this year (congrats to them by the way) then the derbies are back! Great at the start; poor in the middle and ok in the end...its better than being poor all three parts; hopefully next season is a top half finish...we need to progress slowly but surely.

Who would you give the Sunderland player of the year to?
It has to be Darren Bent. To come here and to score 25 goals (24 of them in the league) and being in the running for the England squad is fantastic! For him to be constantly scoring whilst we were on that winless run for 3 months or so shows us how valuable he has been and, without him, we will be in Burnley/Hull's position -- down!

You had a dodgy patch in the middle of the season, and you looked like you might be in a relegation battle. You picked up but is Steve Bruce the right manager to take you forward?
Absolutely! There has been some doubters during that period and rightly so, but ever since the 4-0 win against Bolton at our place we have looked the 'real deal' again...Brucie will only leave us for Man United in my view...so hopefully we will have him for a while! With Brucie and God Niall Quinn as our chairman, I firmly believe we can eventually get to that top 7...

What do you think of Wolves season, and how did you see the game at the Stadium of Light?
Wolves have had a good season, to come up and survive pretty comfortably with a couple of games to go is a job well done in my book, I've always liked Mick McCarthy so it's nice to see him doing well there, I hope to see Wolves have a mid-table finish next season...the game at the SOL was a strange one in all honesty; when we gone 2-0 up I went to the toilet, came back it was 2-1; went back down a few minutes later for a drink, came back up and it's 2-2, I couldn’t believe it! Then we came back to win 5-2: that game was strange, you deserved a draw definitely (perhaps even a win) so for us to win 5-2 is a bit odd. I am not complaining though

If you could take any Wolves player to Sunderland, who would it be?
Has to be Kevin Doyle; Doyle + Bent would work well together I think and with Jones going in the Summer most likely...don't be surprised if he puts a bid in if he fails to get Zamora. Although, a special mention does go out to Dave Jones who looks like a good midfielder of what I have seen of him

And finally, what is your prediction?
A score draw; both sides nothing really to play for, we get an early goal, and you get an equaliser with about 20 minutes to play...a bit of a boring game; 1-1...If anyone will win it however, it will be Wolves; our away form is still pitiful despite a 1-0 win against Hull (who were just SO poor)!

Thanks Lee!

  1. Glad to see he isn't one of those big headed Sunderland fans. He has pretty decent expectations.

Also, glad we Wolves fans were kind of right in thinking a 5-2 defeat was unfair on us.

Bent for England defo, 24 PL goals says it all

  2. Bent for England, I'm not sure. Good striker, but experience?

1-1 fair prediction. Great story for the game though!

We'll thrash 'em 1-0 (yes, 1-0) and make them look silly.

Bruce is a good manager (shame he managed Blouse) and I think you are right in thinkinh he might be Manure manager.

    Sort out Richardson's ponytail too!

  4. What a load of rubbish. any team that scores 5 while the other team only scores 2 deserves to win. It's as simple as that. And we'll score another 5 this weekend too. Darren Bent is on fire!

  5. You were well beaten at the SoL. Only Wolves fans and this fella seem to think otherwise. Reminds me of the games against Hull last year and this year. According to the Hull fans they played us off the park but we still managed to beat them 4-1 home and away.

  6. What a shame to see so many abusive intellectually challenged Wolves posters. As a Sunderland fan I have visited Wolves as a club a number of times over the last 60 years.

I have always advocated that clubs like wolves who have genuine history and charisma are needed in the premiership particularly as for me it is only 50 minutes up the road.

You have taken enough of our players and a former manager to reach where you are, it is rather pathetic to be sneering at a club that has struggled like yourselves to fight their way back into the top league and does your club little credit.

Bent is much better than many give him credit for because he has achieved his goals with little support from a side hit by injuries for most of the season. These continued in the United match.

Lets hope the final game of the season is good enough to attract even more support next year for both of our clubs

  7. Wolves deserved nothing from the game at the SoL. Yes you battled and brought it back to 2-2 but you could and should have been dead and burried before then. To score another 3 goals says it all. You were stuffed.

  8. athedley, please ignore the minority of Wolves fans who choose to abuse. The game at the Stadium of Light was a very ood one. One which Wolves were quite unlucky (we should have had a pen, you shouldn't) but in the end we lost. We lost because we didn't do enough to win, therefore didn't deserve to win.

Of the sunderland players we signed, how many are in our team? Maybe you were to ignorant to look at our teamsheet week in week out. Only Craddock (our player of the year) is still there. Mick has done a splendid job and was not backed by the Sunderland board.

  9. I'm deleting the abusive comments, because frankly that's not on. Nobody deserves any abuse. The cheap shot by Athedley is a slightly sad one (only Craddock, and we got him pre-McCarthy)

Moving onwards, good luck on Sunday. May the best team win.
