Could this game decide Mick's future?

There haven't been too many points at which I've thought 'Mick's job is in trouble now', but this is one of them.

Maybe at times during the 07/08 season, and during Swansea and Sunderland games but generally his job has always seemed extremely secure. And maybe it still is.

The Birmingham game seemed to have been a huge tipping point for fans. On forums, blogs, articles, social networks, it was the worst I've seen at times. It wasn't the fact that we had lost to a Championship side, and our rivals (which is bad enough), but the fact that yet again we looked like a poor footballing side playing a rigid formation.

That's what the problem has been this season, there hasn't been much to give us hope. Last season, we looked like a side that just needed a bit of luck and that we could pull away (I still think we would have if Doyle hadn't got injured), whereas this year we have played next to no football, at anytime. We haven't had any great footballing performances like City home and away, United away and Chelsea away.

A poor performance, and defeat to go with it and I actually think Morgan may think he needs to take action. With only a week and a half left of the transfer window, he might want to get someone in quickly to make his own signings.

A good performance, even if we didn't win, would go a long way to settling Wolves fans fears. Against a poor Villa side, who I think could easily get dragged into a relegation battle, we need to see that this team can get the ball down and move it about comfortably.

The question is, will Mick go with this approach, and can we put in a half decent performance tomorrow?

  1. The problem with the majority of Wolves supporters is that they think after nearly 3 seasons we should be in the top 5 and playing football like Barca. Fact is Wolves are an average team that sometimes put in performances above and beyond what we normally see. As for the Villa match, even if we loose it MM will not get the sack, I think MM is "sack-proof" at this moment.

We must remember that it was our reserve team playing against Birmingham. That's how far we've progressed. Many of these players were first team regulars short time ago, or many have been involved.

The last couple of matches against Arsenal and Chelski have been positives. And I'm sure Morgan never will fire MM if he don't have a better alternative to take over. I think MM will, if MM navigates away from bottom 3 continues through out the season. And then Morgan is going to assess if we've actually progressed from last season.

  3. We'll need more than a 'half-decent' performance to beat Villa, even if they are poor at the moment... though the Birmingham game was our reserve side, a) they still should have done better and b) doesn't bode well for the squad's depth.

Still - a Villa win would put Wolves on track again! Here's hoping...

There is no question of McCarthy being sacked for the following reasons:
    1. Steve Morgan realises that sacking McCarthy would mean a hefty payout.
    2. It would also mean paying compensation to another club for a new manager.
    3. The new manager would then require funds to replace those players who don't measure up to his standards or style of play.
    4. Those new players would invariably be of better class than we have at present, therefore upping the salary bill.
    5. Do you really need a number 5?
I think that should have answered why McCarthy will be at Molineux for as long as he wants to be because ..... well read the above again!

  5. Surprised this isn't seen as a six pointer! Put in a performance tomorrow, with what will be a good side, and we fall one side of the knife edge - phew! We fall the other way if we don't perform. The clouds are gathering - fan discontent is rightly growing with regular bad performances in the main, and the competition around us are picking up points. Hold tight!

That's a good point. If he's going to be replaced I suspect a "cheap" manager like Ian Holloway could do the trick for Morgan.

  7. You are right that the muppet is sack proof, so i wont point out his
countless failings. but no fan expects top 5 so stop exaggerating to
prove your very weak point. What we want is some semblance of
improvement, which has not happenned in the past 3 years... in fact, if
anything we are, for the first time, THE WORST team in the premiership
even though we are one of the TOP 6 SPENDERS in the division. The man,
and by proxy his supporters, is a moron.

  8. Good heavens man, you are deluding yourself. DOYLE / BERRA / SEB / HAMMIL / HUNT / STEARMAN / FLETCHER / WARD...
thats the bulk of our "FIRST" Team...FFS... and the best player was
academy graduate Doherty... sometimes I wonder about the sanity of my
    fellow Wulfrunians...

  10. where do you get "the majority" of wolves fans from? I'd say the majority just want profression ie top half finish playing with style, skill and passion....whats wrong with wanting that?

  11. I actually think fan discontent peaked a month ago and simmered a little with somewhat decent performances against the top 4...
However, that much anxiety and frustration wont sink too far beneath
the surface, and despite being called mindless idiots we can see that
there is ZERO progression in relation to our contemporaries... if
anything we are in the weakest position yet in the prem. He has spent
enough to get us to safety, yet his incompetence leaves us fighting for
our lives, and no doubt, will again next season if we manage to survive.
At some point something needs to give.

  12. Look what Lamberts done at Norwich !! there's no big cheques being handed out there!!

  13. In four days many of us have gone from euphoria to despair. Enough has been said about these contrasting performance so no need for further comment. On McCarthy's future I very much doubt if he would be replaced now. Should have happened at same time as Sunderland ditched Bruce. If we survive his job will be safe. I agree with much of the above but I will be there as usual tomorrow supporting my team hoping we can grind sufficient points to stay up again. This is what real supporters do whether you like the man or not

  14. i think that MM should be sacked football Negative

  15. It's all well and good speculating on whether his job is safe but now oneill and Hughes are off the menu who would we have. I'd make an offer to Norwich for Lambert but I doubt he'd want to leave them for us!

  16. There is nothing wrong with wanting the best for your team. "Real " supporters watch every game, get upset when we lose etc... but we also raise our voices when something is is very very wrong... we can do both you know.

Ward and Fletcher entered into the middle of the match, SEB seldom starts matches, and neither does Stearman when Zubar is injury free. Doyle is on his way out, Hammill is not a regular. Only Berra, can be seen as a first time regular when we have all players are injury free!

Yes he has done a great job. The question is if it's just a lucky first season?

  20. Ad mant you are the biggest cretinous moron that has the audacity to call himself a wolves fan 0- you are not and never will be, you were most likely one of those idiots who were calling for Mick's head when we were......................Promoted!

    ReplyDelete
  21. your wasting your time trying to talk sense to this idiot Karlir - he knows it all or he thinks he does - I challenge him to go call Mick to his face what he say's on here and vital wolf, the guy is a coward, any so called fan who ridicules the manager and players in public/bloggs is no fan - you cant sink any lower.

  22. lets see if lambert keeps Norwich in the league for three seasons then you can gob off, also did Lambert build his team from scratch? maybe you would rather go back to those days admant, you certainly talk like it -there again thats all you do - TALK!

  23. why don't you just go and do one...................................off a cliff!

  24. amd you are real? lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, lol, you are a joke, second word is off,.

    ReplyDelete
  25. see admant - you must be joined at the hip or you just follow the sheep!

    ReplyDelete
  26. sevlow - we are building - slowly but not fast enough for some "fans" who would see us do a pompy or a southampton etc, people in the know often say that it takes 3/4 years consolidation in the premiership before you can start to move forward, managers with far more qualifications than me have said it - who am I to argue? I wonder if" we go down how many will be supporting us in the championship just like they did in the 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th divisions or will they wait till we are back in the premiership, then they can tell the world what "big" loyal fans they are!
ok bring in a new manager - then if he does the same has Mick has done but takes us no further we sack him, and the next, and the next.... and thats progresion!
Maybe if Man U fans had got their way all those years ago Man U would not be were they are today, same goes for us when we sacked Stan Cullis? we never really recovered - until now, Mick's big mistake this season is that he failed to beat the unmentionables, if he had he would have been a god.
Hands up all those who thought the team he picked on wednesday would not beat the blues! I thought we would murder them, but we never turned up - that ain't Micks fault and anybody who say's it is - well words fail me!

  29. The club keep telling us that Mick is in no danger, perhaps we should start believing them. On the other point, you are spot on, the football has been awful at times and lacking imagination and creativity pretty much all of the time. But what can you expect when you have a manager who thinks tactics are little white mints.

    ReplyDelete
  30. In three premier league seasons I've seen our football grow more and more negative, the players stifled in their roles and confidence continually draining away. Our tactics have been laughable and our latest reinforcements are a signal that we'll be parking the bus in forthcoming games. It's painful to watch and with a recession looming I see attendances falling further. Who in their right mind is going to spend money on such a shambles? McCarthy is the reason we're in this position; he has stopped the players from expressing themselves with a rigid formation that doesn't work for us. Doyle looks a shadow of himself, SEB would rather run in-field with the ball than shoot, Hunt is nowhere near his best and Jarvis is back to cutting the ball back instead of taking his man on. Those are our attacking players and they're not doing it. Only Fletcher is still doing the business but if he's not getting decent service we're in trouble. I've never known a manager cause such division amongst fans and that itself is a bad sign. Fans aren't stupid and have the right to feel aggrieved by false promises and poor performances but the buck stops with McCarthy. A change would be best for all concerned.
