The boys are back in town

Well, I can't say for sure if they left the Wolverhampton in between training (they probably did: Clicky) but you know what I mean.

Nearly all the Wolves players are back training, doing all sorts of fitness tests and I'm genuinely excited about the season ahead.

Firstly, we've spent £15 million on four players before July. All four players, cover positions we need cover in and are more than good enough for the Premier League. It creates competition of places between lots of quality players.

We finally get to show everyone what a real derby is. For the first time in a very long time (26 years), both Wolves and West Brom will play top flight football in the same season. Most Wolves (and West Brom) fans have always wanted to do battle in the Premier League. It would be great if all the midlands clubs did well and the new big four will have some exciting matches this season.

Michael Kightly is slowly but surely getting back to full fitness. He hasn't made the start of training but has said he wants to be playing in a couple of friendlies. A fully fit Kightly could rip some teams apart, he's been unfortunate and he will be like a new signing.

And finally, the stadium plans. They look fantastic. Filling in some corners, increasing the capacity. Morgan is thinking about the future, a big future. How amazing would it be if we are an established side in a few years playing in a packed 40,000 Molineux? They should start phase one in the new year.

So, English Wolves fans, there is a few reasons to be cheerful.

The Hunt is over, but where does he fit in?

So, it's official.

We all knew it was coming. Ever since January, everyone knew we wanted him. He is Doyle's best mate, and he knows quite a few of our players.

But where will he play?

He is versatile, and you know he will work hard where ever he plays but whose place would he take. Could he go on the right wing, and be ahead of Kightly? Or ahead of one of our star players in Jarvis? I've seen him play left back too but Van Damme has just signed.

Mick must have a plan, and where ever he plays we know he is a good player who will help our cause for next season.

What do you think?

What a load of rubbish

No, not the English performance against the United States.

The idea that they played poorly on Saturday night.

I wasn't surprised to see the way the press reacted, and the way most English people reacted. They all seemed to think that the draw against USA means we have no chance and that it's all over. Why?

They didn't play as badly as people think. We had most of the possession, and for the majority of the match were doing all the attacking. Lampard and Gerrard did fine in the middle, though Lampard did go missing for a while (probably because he was the one holding) Gerrard led by example in the middle.

I thought our best player by a mile was Heskey. He gets a lot of stick but was the better forward. He held it up brilliantly, and hardly lost the ball at all. Next to him, Rooney is usually very good. He didn't get involved enough, and was being kicked at every chance by  the centre back Onyewu, who was superb.

Johnson gave us a lot going forward, and defensively was sound. What happened to Green, well that just happens every now and then. That was of course, in all the headlines but I'm sure he will come back stronger from it. He did in the second half make one fantastic save, which no one seemed to notice. I wonder why? His interview after was good, I hope Capello sticks with him.

The only negative that I thought came out of the game was one man who came on.. Jamie Carragher. He simply isn't good enough anymore. He's had a torrid season, has lost his pace and the composure on the ball he used to have. See when he got turned inside out by Altidore, that will keep happening. Without Ferdinand and King, it has to be Dawson for me. He has what it takes, even though he is uncapped.

So, keep the faith and get behind the boys. They are good enough to get further than we have in recent years. A draw in this game isn't all that bad. In fact, it's good we made some mistakes we can learn from and improve on.

And to those who entered the Prediction League, the table is up (not in the right order at the moment) on the WC Prediction League Page. For those who haven't predicted, you can do so tomorrow when I post the next week's fixtures.

World Cup 2010 - Group H Preview

Finally, we finish with Group H. We have the best team in the world in Spain, Switzerland, Chile and Honduras. Spain are the obvious clear favourites, and although they have often let down their fans when hyped up, should win this group easily. The second spot, well it's tight. Chile are 17th in the world, but Switzerland are one place below them in 18th. Honduras sit in 39th.

Spain

Key men: They have so many. Iniesta, Fabregas and Xavi cover the middle of midfield. Not to forget Xabi Alonso and peeker Sergio Busquets. In attack, Fernando Torres and David Villa are supported by David Silva. Spain also have one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Iker Casillas is heavily covered by Carlos Puyol, Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique. Their only problem is at left back, even though Arbeloa and Capdevila are alright.

Story of qualifying: Not much to talk about here. Won their group, and won all their games.

How will they do?: Easy peasy, despite some of their stars recovering from injuries. They have the best squad at the world cup by a mile. 1st

Switzerland

Key men: Alexander Frei leads the line for Switzerland. Vahlon Behrami is a star for them, though he may miss a game or two through injury. Phillipe Senderos is a rock at the back

Story of qualifying: They defended their way through their group and won it. They finished ahead of Greece (what a game that must have been!) by a point. They did lose to Luxembourg though, at home!

How will they do?: They will be hard to beat, but attacking teams like Spain and Chile probably have enough to unlock their defence. 3rd

 Chile

Key men: Humbero Suazo is their main source of goals. A worry for them is that he is struggling for fitness. Goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who plays for Real Sociedad, is the team captain after Marcelo Salas retired. Ex Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez is a threat on the wings to any defender.

Story of qualifying: They finished a point behind Brazil in second. They scored plenty of goals, the second highest, but conceded the most of the qualifiers.

How will they do?: I think with their attacking style they will do well. Switzerland don't offer that much, and Honduras aren't the strongest of sides. 2nd

 Honduras

Key men: Wilson Palacios is a huge player, and is going to be fit according to the man himself. He suffered an injury scare which would have ended all of Honduras' small hopes. His ex Wigan team mate Maynor Figueroa at left back is a very good player. Carlos Pavon and David Suazo will lead the front line.

Story of qualifying: They qualified thanks to an injury time from the United States! Bornstein equalised in the fourth minute of added time against Costa Rica. The Costa Ricans lead by two goals for most of the match and were sailing through to the world cup. Honduras must like the USA a lot now.

How will they do?: They have a few good players, but like a lot of teams I have predicted bottom finishes for not enough of them. I hope they prove me wrong, but I can't see them winning a game. Maybe against the Swiss. 4th

That is it for my World Cup Previews. Look out tomorrow for the predictions article where you can predict your world cup winners, golden boot and all of the first week's matches. I will remind you fo the points scoring, with a couple of changes.

World Cup 2010 - Group G Preview

This is my favourite group! It should be the most entertaining group of all in this world cup. Seen as the group of death, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea will be battling to make it through.

Brazil

Key men: There are quite a few. Kaka is their main man at the moment. Luis Fabiano has a sensational record at international record, and will look to add to that this summer. They have many others. Robinho, Pato, Alves and Maicon will be other important players in Brazil's world cup.

Story of qualifying:  They lost only two of their eighteen games, but only topped their group by a single point. Chile and Paraguay both finished a point below. They didn't have to break much sweat though, and they will have to work much harder in this group.

How will they do?: In this group, Brazil are still loads better than anyone else. Barring disaster, they should cruise through. 1st

North Korea

Key men: Hong Yong-Jo was instrumental in the qualifying success, and is one of the only North Korea players playing outside his homeland. He currently plays up front for FC Rostov is Russia. Yong Hak An is a hard worker in midfield, with an eye for goal.

Story of qualifying: They qualified as runners up in the same group as rivals South Korea, edging Saudi Arabia out on goal difference. In the final game, they faced the Saudis away and came away with a nil nil draw to go through.

How will they do?: A point is a huge success for them. They've been drawn in the hardest group possible, and could get a couple of thrashings. 4th

Ivory Coast

Key men: If Didier Drogba recovers after he broke his arm, he will be their star. They have a lot of good players. The Toure brothers, Kone, Gervinho, Keita and Kalou.

Story of qualifying: They had an easy ride. They topped their group without losing and drawing only once. Their group included Burkino Fasao, Malawi and Guinea.

How will they do?: Second spot is between 'The Elephants' and Portugal. I can see them beating them to it. 2nd

Portugal

Key men: They have one of the biggest stars in the world. He hasn't performed for them in the past couple of years, but Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the stars in Germany 2006. Nani has been ruled out, so they will have to rely on players like Simao, Deco and Liedson.

Story of qualifying: They made hard work of it. They failed to qualify automatically and had to play Bosnia in the play offs. They beat them two nil on aggregate, goals from Bruno Alves and Raul Meireles sent them through.

How will they do?: They have been poor under Carlos Quieroz, and after drawing nil nil with Cape Verde (a team with many first team players including Ronaldo and Nani) I cannot see them finishing in the top two. 3rd

World Cup 2010 - Group F Preview

My fifth preview of the groups, I will talk about Italy, New Zealand, Paraguay and Slovakia. Italy won the last world cup on penalties. The final wasn't very good, and it's only remembered for the famous headbutt on Marco Matterazzi by Zinedine Zidane. They face three teams they are expected to easily beat but New Zeland will always put up a fight and the other two, Paraguay and Slovakia, have some very talented players.

Italy

Key men: Their star man at the moment is midfielder Daniele De Rossi. He is tough, good on the ball and a leader. Italy have some aging stars in their squad such as Cannavaro, Gattuso and Zambrotta. Between the sticks they have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Gianluigi Buffon.

Story of qualifying: They topped their group, six points ahead of Republic of Ireland. They did it in the typical Italian way, securing qualification with a last minute equaliser.

How will they do?: They have got a lucky draw, they will grind their way through with three clean sheets. 1st

New Zealand

Key men: Captain Ryan Nelsen is also Blackburn's captain. They will need him to be rock solid. They also have youngster Chris Wood (plying his trade for they who shall not be named, you know who I mean.)

Story of qualifying: They qualified by a single goal. They were forced to play in a play off game v Bahrain. Rory Fallon's 45th minute goal in the second leg was enough to send them through.

How will they do?: Not very well. I'd like to see them do well, their manager played for us! Unfortunately, they don't have the standard of players to finish above any of these teams. 4th

Paraguay

Key men: Roque Santa Cruz is the biggest name in their squad, but that doesn't mean he is a cert to start. Benfica man Oscar Cardozo is their best player at the moment and their are other forwards who will challenge to play alongside him. Nelson Valdez and Lucas Barrios will battle it out with Santa Cruz for a starting place in the team.

Story of qualifying: They finished third in their group, which means an automatic place. They finished above Argentina and Uruguay to qualify easily. They beat Brazil and the Argies along the way.

How will they do?: It is a two man battle for that second place. I think they have a good chance, if their star players play well.. That's an 'if' and I don't think they will. 3rd

Slovakia

Key men: Marek Hamsik is a shining star for Slovakia, but this is no one man team. The manager's son, Validimir Weiss Jr was excellent on loan at Bolton and will start on the right wing. The goalkeeper, Jan Mucha was another star in their qualifying and forward Stanislav Sestak scored the vital goals.

Story of qualifying: They topped a group ahead of another team who qualified, Slovenia. They also fnished above Czech Republic and Northern Ireland. They did it in the last game, with a win in Poland. They won a tough group.

How will they do?: I like this team, and I think they will qualify. They have a good spine throughout the team and have enough to see off Paraguay and New Zealand. 2nd

World Cup 2010 - Group E Preview

This is one of the two groups that doesn't have a former world cup winner. Holland are of course the nearly men in world cup history, losing two world cup finals in succession. In their group they face Cameroon, Denmark and Japan. Cameroon have some quality players, Denmark have some England based players and Japan impressed despite losing to England two one.

Holland

Key men: Arjen Robben, who is a a doubt for the finals, is a massive player for them. When he was fit for Bayern he was stunning. Robin Van Persie, another injury hit player, will lead their attack with van der Vaart and Sneijder behind him.

Story of qualifying: They cruised through their group, which had Scotland in it. They won all eight games and most impressively, only conceded two goals throughout.

How will they do?: They will probably put in a couple of very good performances, to build up the expectations when they probably fail in the knockout rounds. 1st

Cameroon

Key men: Eto'o will lead the line for them, for them to do well he needs to be in form. Alex Song was one of Arsenal's star players, and his cousin (not, not Uncle!) Rigobert will be playing.

Story of qualifying: They lost their first game against Togo, but turned it around to go undefeated for the rest of the campaign and finish four points clear of Gabon to win their group.

How will they do?: It will be close between them and Denmark. They have the players, and a very good team spirit. 2nd

Denmark

Key men: If he makes it, Thomas Sorensen will be an important man in their team. They have Agger from Liverpool in their defence and they boast a decent forward line in Jon Dahl Tomasson and Nicklas Bendtner.

Story of qualifying: They did well to qualify in a tough group. They were drawn against Portugal and Sweden, but came out on top. They qualified with a game to spare, and lost their only game in the last one to Hungary. One amazing game I will point out, as the match they won 3-2 in Portugal. They equalised with six minutes to go, only to blow it two minutes later. They pulled back in the last minute, and two minutes into extra time Jensen got the winner.

How will they do?: As I said, I think it is out of them and Cameroon. They have a solid defence, and will hold some good teams out if they get through. I don't think they will. 3rd

Japan

Key men: ex Celtic man Shunsuke Nakamura will carry Japanese hopes on his shoulders. He is the experienced player in their team, watch out for his free kicks. Keisuke Honda impressed against England, and is another key players.

Story of qualifying: They were the second team to qualify. Only Australia , the team who finished top in the group qualified before. They lost their only game against them, and finished in second comfortably.

How will they do?: I thought they were excellent against England, they made them look very poor. They moved it about well, but I don't think they will be able to do that consistently. 4th

Wolves equal transfer record.

We've signed our number one target now, Steve Fletcher has signed a four year deal with Wolves.

I think he is a good player, a clever player who should work well with Doyle up front. Is that what it means though? Four four two? I keep having his bad feeling that he is Doyle's replacement, and that we will carry on playing five in midfield, or as Mick likes to call it 'three up front'. If it means they play together, it shows some intent. Two six and half million players, hard working players who can take us right up the league table.

I haven't seen that much of him, but what I have has been good. He scored and set up goals in a struggling Burnley team, which is impressive.

What do you think? Think we paid too much, or that he won't fit in? Comment!

World Cup 2010 - Group D Preview

Now we come to Group D, one of the groups of death. I say 'one of' because there is a tougher one, but this is still a tough one!

We have Germany, Australia, Ghana and Serbia. Germany often do well in the World Cup, so will be the clear favourites to win it, but Serbia have stars from many top teams and Ghana and Australia have talented players too. A match to watch will be Germany v Ghana were there is a possibility that brothers Kevin Prince and Jerome Boateng will go head to head.

Germany

Key men:  With Ballack out, they will have to rely on players like Bastian Schweinsteiger. He will be vital for them. New skipper Phillip Lahm is one of the best full backs around, but many are questioning manager Low's decision to name him captain. If Miraslov Klose scores four in this tournament, he will be the new world cup highest scorer.

Story of qualifying: They won their group, four points ahead of Russia. They didn't lose a game, but a worrying point might be that they failed to beat Finland at all.

How will they do?: It's a tough group but come on, it's the Germans. 1st

Australia

Key men: Harry Kewell is a major player for them, but their most important must be Tim Cahill. The Everton man has had a good season and will hope to carry on his form into the tournament. I didn't know he played for Australia until a few years ago. Not because I didn't know he was Australian but because on Championship Manager 01-02 he is retired from international football.

Story of qualification: They topped their group without losing, drawing twice. They had no problems at all.

How will they do?: They will look to improve on a second round exit in 2006 (against the eventual winners, Italy) but I can't see it. 3rd

Ghana

Key men: Like Germany, Ghana are missing their most influential player. It's worse for Ghana though, because they rarely have one of the best players in the world. Without Essien, skipper Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari will be two key midfielders who will be desperate to shine in Essien's absence. They have a good solid defender in John Mensah, who scored an own goal when he played Wolves for sunderland but he is struggling with injury. And, as I previously mentioned, Kevin Prince Boateng is in the Ghana squad.

Story of qualification: They topped their group, in a pretty easy one. They finished three points clear of Benin, and four clear of Freddie Kanoute's Mali.

How will they do?: Without Essien, it doesn't look good. They won't give up easily, but I don't think they will be able to replicate their 2006 performance. 4th

Serbia

Key men: Their captain is recent Champions League winner Dejan Stankovic at Inter. He will pull the strings in midfield alongside Wolves star Nenad Milijas. Watch out for his set piece ability, his free kicks cause  havoc. They have two great defenders in Ivanovic and Vidic, they will be the centre back pairing. Six foot eight striker Nikola Zigic is sure to be a menace up front.

Story of qualifying: They finished above controversial qualifiers France. By a point. They beat them once and drew with them to secure qualification.

How will they do?: I think this team can go far. They have some great players and a good team spirit. 2nd

I think I could have predicted all of the wrong. It's that tight. What do you think?

Wednesday, 2 June 2010

Farewell Big Chris, welcome Jelle!

Yesterday we saw one player head out of the Molineux, while one came in the other way.

Big Chris Iwelumo is off to relegated Burnley, in a deal reckoned to be around £500k. Iwelumo played a huge part in our promotion, scoring fifteen goals in the first half of the season. He was a hit with the fans, as he formed one of the most feared strike partnerships in the country with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. He started the season injured, and found himself down in the pecking order. He went out on loan, got a couple of goals for Bristol City and came on as a sub in the last few games.

It's a good move for him, at Burnley he will play more football, and he will be playing at a level that suits him. Good luck, hope to see him in the Premier League with Burnley.

We also made our third signing for next season. Following Adlene Guedioura and Geoffrey Mujangi Bia is Jelle Van Damme. His name is a dream come true for news websites (I haven't made a stupid joke about it), and he plays at the back and sometimes in midfield. His preferred position is left back, which is why we have signed him. We are in need of a decent left back, now I think we need a midfielder and maybe a striker (could be Fletcher).

Looks like a good signing, we shall see.

World Cup 2010 - Group C Preview

Here's my preview of Group C which contains England, USA, Algeria and Slovenia. We all know who the favourites are but again in this group the second place is up for grabs.

England

Key men:  I think there is this bloke, erm... Wayne something. The English nation's hope rest on Wayne Rooney, no pressure then. Of course, they have some other not as good but good players. Gerrard and Lampard will also be important, and whoever plays on the wings.

Story of qualifying: They won this group pretty easy. They won nine out of ten games, including the destruction of Croatia home and away.

How will they do?: Top is the minimum expectation, and they have no reason not to expect it as they will be too strong for the rest. 1st

 USA

Key men: Their star man is probably the United States' finest ever. Landon Donovan, very much like Wayne Rooney, will be the key to their success. Clint Dempsey is another very good player, will Jozy Altidore is an exciting player.

Story of qualifying: They topped their group, finishing a point above Mexico. They never looked in trouble during the qualification.

How will they do?: They have the second strongest squad in the group, but it won't be easy. 2nd

 Algeria

Key men: Their star man, Meghni, is ruled out with injury but players like Belhadj and Bougherra are very important to them. Of course, they have Wolves man Adlene Guedioura who is looking ever more likely to be in their starting line up.

Story of qualifying: With one game left, they faced the only team who could put them out. As they had already beaten Egypt 2-0, the Egyptians had to beat them by three goals to qualify automatically. Beat them by two, and it would go to a play off as they would be in identical positions. Algeria went to Egypt, were met by fans who attacked them and they lost two nil. In the play off they beat them one nil, Antar Yahia's first half strike enough to send them through.

How will they do?: They have some good players, but not enough good players. Can make it through but would be a small surprise. 3rd

 Slovenia

Key men: German based forward  Milivoje Novakovic has been one of their star players in qualifying. The Cologne striker scored five in qualifying, including two in the play offs vs Russia. Bojan Jokic is an influential midfielder and don't forget their captain, ex Baggie Robert Koren is a vital part of their team.

Story of qualifying: They had to qualify through the play off route. They secured a place in the world cup with a memorable two legged tie with Russia. They went through on away goals.

How will they do?: They will struggle, and while they have some skillful players they should end the group stages on zero points. 4th.

Disagree? Maybe you think England will flop, or Slovenia will rule. Comment and give your opinion!
